Thyroid Panel: What Your TSH and T4 Levels Reveal

Understanding Your Thyroid

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that produces hormones controlling metabolism, energy, and many body functions. Thyroid disorders are common, especially in women.

Key Thyroid Markers

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and signals your thyroid to produce hormones.

  • Normal: 0.4-4.0 mIU/L
  • High TSH: May indicate hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Low TSH: May indicate hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
  • Free T4 (Thyroxine)

T4 is the main hormone produced by your thyroid.

  • Normal: 0.8-1.8 ng/dL
  • Low T4 with high TSH: Suggests hypothyroidism
  • High T4 with low TSH: Suggests hyperthyroidism
  • Free T3 (Triiodothyronine)

T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone.

  • Normal: 2.3-4.2 pg/mL
  • Symptoms of Thyroid Disorders

    Hypothyroidism (Underactive)

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Cold intolerance
  • Dry skin
  • Depression
  • Hyperthyroidism (Overactive)

  • Weight loss despite increased appetite
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Heat intolerance
  • Tremors
  • Who Should Get Tested?
